Warhol Retrospective At Tate Modern

Sorry to intrude on the territory of London blogger, Captain JP, but I had to post a few words about the upcoming Andy Warhol restrospective at London's Tate Modern museum.

The controversial 20th century American artist who launched the Pop Art movement in the 1960s is perhaps best remembered for his posterized multiple image prints of iconic figures from American culture like Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, Muhammad Ali, and Elizabeth Taylor.

But the highlight of the Tate exhibit will be the first public showing of a recently discovered print of American sailing icon Tillerman.

I imagine JP will have more details for us when the exhibit opens in April.

  3. On second thoughts, Tillerwoman wants a 4 foot square print of this for the bedroom wall.

    1. Warhol's life may be summarized in your (or Tillerwoman's) last two comments.

At first his work was considered 'non-art' by the skeptics, but his fame would eventually last more than 15 minutes.

I, on the other hand, am still waiting.

  5. OMG - is the Tate exhibition including "Man with shovel III"? I can not wait!! I wonder if the Tate's Lichtenstein retrospective will include "Take that snow!" and the RA's Unknown Monet the haunting "Scène d'hiver: l'homme avec une pelle"

    Will report back....

    1. I know, when I was working I probably would have just left a simple comment on Tillerman's blog and be done.

But this is the kind of useful and productive stuff you can do in retirement.

Tillerwoman suggests I should get a life. Maybe I should get a part-time job as a greeter at West Marine. Or, maybe I should write a post asking readers to suggest better ways I could be spending my time..

    3. You need a Big Hairy Ass Goal. How about learning to sail a Laser well enough to sail in the 2013 Masters Worlds in Oman and beat TIllerman?

  7. A worthy attempt, Doc.

But a truly legitimate result would have illustrated the breakup of the image via the screening material as the pigment began to fill it in over many uses.

The first image would be sharp and clear, but the final image should have been a sort of vertical blob with something that looks like a horizontal feather, in front of a non-descript smear.

    Sigh.

Modern technology just rips the guts out of creating modern art these days.

    1. I was using a very old version of Photoshop that doesn't have the vertical blob with something that looks like a horizontal feather, in front of a non-descript smear filter.

You're right, though. Digital technology is making everything too easy. My effort took about 15 minutes, and I didn't have to mix up any paints.

I think I came across a web site a few months ago that will do something like this to any photo you upload. So, I 'm still claiming to be the artist for having chosen the colors and done a few other tweaks myself.

I wonder if all of this technology is leaving us less satisfied with life, which has no simple way to change hue, saturation, or brightness.
